Project history

Development of Klas Horn class, orders for building were given out in 1933 (Göteborg and Stockholm), 1936 (Karlskrona and Malmö) and 1939 (Norrköping and Gävle). They were differed from predecessors by more powerful machinery and slightly increased hull length. The fwd superstructure had larger size and new director was installed.

All ships of class had appeared very fast. The best result has shown by Malmö: she could reach 42kts on trials (at full displacement!).

Modernizations

1948-1953, Stockholm, Malmö, Karlskrona, Gävle, Norrköping: beam increased to 9.70m, standard displacement was 1140t; - (2 - 3) x 2 - 25/58, 2 x 1 - 8.76; + 2 x 2 - 40/70 M48A, mine stowage increased to 46, radar

1960, Malmö; 1962, Gävle; 1963, Karlskrona: - 2 x 3 - 533 TT; + 2 x 3 - 305 Squid Mk 4 ASWRL, mine stowage increased to 130, type 293 radar, sonar

Naval service

Göteborg was lost 17.9.1941 in Haarsfjärden naval base near Stockholm at explosion of standing nearby destroyer Klas Uggla. Subsequently Göteborg was salvaged and repaired, entering service again in September, 1943. All were re-rated as frigates in 1961.
