Project history

Construction of first four enlarged versions of the British Sundown-class minehunter design at Izar, Cartagena, was initially authorized in 1992 and confirmed by the Spanish cabinet in 1993. Two more minehunters were ordered in December 2000. Construction technology assistance was provided by France's DCN. The SMYC/CM (sistema de mando y control para cazaminas) minehunting data and command system is based on the GEC-Marconi NAUTIS-M; it has three CM-1 operator consoles and is integrated with the FABA PN/UDDB navigation system. The first four carry two Gayrobot Pluto Plus mine-detection and disposal vehicles, while later units carry Kongsberg Minesniper mine-disposal ROVs; an order for four additional ship-sets was placed in 2003.
