Project history

Five ordered on 10 May 1904 from the Simon Lake Wks under the 1904 Emergency Programme, while Protector was bought to lead assembly of the whole series and arrived at Kronstadt on 15 June. Renamed Osyotr ('Sturgeon'), she had hydraulically operated wheels (stowed within the keel) to allow the submarine to move on the sea bed and was fitted with a chamber to embark divers when submerged.
