Project history

This was a Project 659 lengthened 5m to accommodate mid-course guidance antennas (for anti-ship attack) and another pair of P-5 launchers.

Modernizations

1965, all earlier boats were rearmed with P-6 or P-6M missiles

1969-1975, some boats: - MG-200 Arktika-M sonar; + MGK-100 Kerch' sonar

1970, K-170 - under Project 675N: - 8 P-6/P-6M SSM, Argon radar; + diving equipment, divers

Naval service

On 10 August 1985 one of K-431 reactors exploded during refuelling in Chazhma Bight near Vladivostok and was never repaired.
