Project history

Project 266M was an improved version of Project 266 in which the coil sweep was replaced by a deep sweep with new control gear; a sweep was provided to deal with active (rising) mines; a 3-channel broadband towed television mine detection sweep system was added; and a sonar was fitted to detect bottom mines. The new ramp stern made it easier to set and recover sweeps. The ship was air conditioned. The main engines were mounted on sound-damping beams and the quiet propellers were shrouded to further reduce sound radiation (a special cavitation monitor was installed). Adjustable protectors compensated for the electric field. The Soviets estimated that a Project 266M minesweeper was nearly 50% more effective than its predecessor Project 266.

The single Project 02666 was built with an aluminium hull. She was a test ship for a mine hunting system deployed from a deckhouse on her fantail, which replaced the standard minesweeping winch of this class.

Modernizations

1980, Dmitriy Lysov - under Project 266MUE: was modernized for training of crews for export ships.
