Project history

The preliminary design for the next ocean minesweeper, Project 266, was completed in 1957; the engineering design was approved in 1959. The main improvement, compared to previous designs, was internal protection against mine explosions. Signatures were also drastically reduced: compared to those of Project 264A, magnetic by a factor of 40, electric (UEP) by a factor of 10-15, acoustic by a factor 3-4, and hydrodynamic (pressure) by 20 to 30%. The hull was built of low-magnetic steel and an automatic control adjusted the degaussing field for, eg, eddy currents generated in the hull as the ship rolled. The design used slow-turning quite propellers as well as rubber damping materials on machinery foundations. Project 266 had special electro-optical sights to detect floating mines.

Project 266 was designed to employ new sweeps, to deal with influence mines at depths from 25 to 150m. The ship also had a capacity to take extra sweeps on board (eg, net sweeps, bottom sweeps). A recent design history mentions automated operation und remote control of sweeps, guns, engines and other equipment.

The main gap in the design was the absence of a sonar to detect bottom mines.
