Project history

Repetition of the previous Maestrale class, but with more powerful machinery. Raise of "official" speed has appeared insignificant though real speed has increased to 33kts. Besides more powerful machinery, on these ships out-of-date 40mm/39 Vickers MGs at last have disappeared from specification. Instead of them the number of 13.2mm MGs was increased twice.

Modernizations

1939 - 1940, all: - 4 x 2 - 13.2/76; + 8 x 1 - 20/65 Breda 1939/1940

Naval service

Two ships were lost 28.3.1941 in battle at Matapan: Vittorio Alfieri was sunk by gunfire of British destroyers Greyhound, Havock and Stuart, and Giosue Carducci by gunfire of British destroyers Jervis, Nubian and Hotspur. Vincenzo Gioberti 9.8.1943 was sunk by British submarine Simoom off La Spezia.
