Project history

Designed by Eng General Imp Benedetto Brin (except Confienza, designed by Eng Director Giacinto Pullino), these steel-hulled ships may all be considered experimental. There were considerable differences among them (notably in their hull shape, boilers, machinery, armament and general appearance), and several alterations were made to them during their service. Monzambano and Goito had two funnels, Montebello three and Confienza one funnel. All were originally rigged with 2 fore and aft sails.

Ship protection

There was 40mm armored deck with slopes.

Modernizations

1894, Goito: central shaft was removed, re-boilered with new oil-burning boilers; 2521hp, 17.2kts; - 1 x 1 - 57/43; + 1 x 1 - 76/40 (temporarily for trials)

1897, Goito: - 5 - 350 TT; + 60 mines

1906, Goito: - 2 x 1 - 37/20, 3 x 5 - 37/20, 60 mines; + 2 x 1 - 57/40 H, 4 x 1 - 350 TT

1898, Montebello: - 2 x 1 - 57/40, 4 - 350 TT

1903, Montebello: was reboilered with 2 Pattison, 2 Yarrow and 2 Thornycroft boilers.

Naval service

The careers of Monzambano and Confienza were short. Goito was converted to a minelayer in 1897 when her IT were removed and provision was made for carrying 60 mines. Montebello was used as a TS for mechanics after 1898; in 1903 she was accordingly modified and reboilered with Pattison, Yarrow and Thornycroft watertube boilers, both coal and oil burners.
