Ship project history: USN river gunboat Luzon was scuttled at Corregidor 6/5/1942, salvaged by Japanese, repaired and 1/8/1942 entered service as Karatsu.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: 3/3/1944 Karatsu was damaged by American submarine Narwhal and has sunk as result of earlier received damages at Manila 3/2/1945.
