Project history

Italian Lupo-class ships ordered in 1981. Building was delay by US objections to the sale of major components of LM-2500 gas turbines. Finally ships were completed in 1985 (first two), 1986 (one) and 1987 (one) but not delivered to Iraq because of a trade embargo imposed during the Iran-Iraq war. They laid at Muggiano and were finally released for delivery in 1990, but delivery did not take place because of Iraqi aggression against Kuwait. Finally ships were taken over by Italian Navy.
