Project history

First two units were ordered in 2000 to replace Ouragan and Orage. Originally typed NTCD (Noueaux Transports de Chalands de Débarquement) and to have been near-sisters to the Foudre class, they are now typed BPC (Bâtiment de Projection et de Commandement). Are to serve for 30 years. Bow sections and accommodations modules were built by Alstom at St.-Nazaire, with the remainder of the hulls and fitting out accomplished at DCN Brest. Tonnerre is specially configured to carry cadets and displays of French military equipment, though remains available primarily for amphibious warfare duties. Work on the first two units began in 2002. A third unit of the class was ordered in 2009 for construction at STX St.-Nazarre, with fitting out taking place at DCNS in Toulon. A fourth unit of the class was planned but abandoned in 2013.

Have a 1,800m² helicopter hangar with a capacity of 16 NH-90 helicopters, two elevators to starboard aft, a 1,000m³ operations direction space, and a 750m² hospital with two operating rooms and 69 beds. They have a bow-to-stern flight deck totaling 5,000 m² and equipped with six deck landing spots for aircraft up to CH-53E Super Stallion and MV-22B Osprey size. There are 2,650 m² of vehicle parking space, enabling the carriage of 54.5t Leclerc heavy tanks, and side-loading vehicle ramps. An 885.5m² (57.5x15.4x8.2m) stern docking well can accommodate one CDIC or four LCM(8)-sized landing craft or two U.S. Navy LCAC air-cushion landing craft. A 17t crane is fitted. There is an NBC protection citadel for the crew, and fin stabilizers are fitted.
