Ship project history: Ships of the class were ordered as part of large 1916 program as 'battle scouts' of 35kt scouting forces. Originally it was planed to construct ships with 10 356/50mm guns in triple and twin turrets but in 1917 caliber was changed to 406mm. There was not enough space below armoured deck for the 24 boilers and half the boilers was placed above main deck in 1916 design. This unusual scheme was later replaced by new also unusual: all 16 boilers were placed under main deck but compartment dividing was new: turbo-generators occupied compartments along centerline and boiler rooms placed aside.
Ship protection: Main 178mm belt was inclined outside at 12° and protected two deck level space, two deck levels above them were protected by upper 57mm belt inclined inside at 10°. Turrets and barbettes had up to 356mm thick armour, CT had 406mm sides. Underwater protection included two 19mm longitudinal bulkheads from each side.
