Ship project history: Tank landing ships intended originally for transportation of tanks across Atlantic. They were designed under the technical project developed by British Admiralty, according to it they should transport through Atlantic 20 medium tanks with their subsequent disembarkation through a bow gangway port on beach. At designing British experience of building of similar purpose ships was used. To distinguish ships built in America, they have appropriated index 2 while British-built Boxer class began to be designated as LST 1.

In comparison with British prototype, .2 have appeared slower on 5 knots, but usage of diesel machinery instead of turbines has allowed to exceed multiply the definition on an endurance: 24 000 (9) miles. Tanks were carried in hold (on a so-called "tank" deck) and on an upper deck. Moving of cargoes from an upper deck on "tank" was realised by means of the lift which, since LST513 (except LST531), has been changed by simple ramp. From LST542 loading was slightly less and at the expense of what it was possible to strengthen AA armament and to equip ships by a powerful distilling plant.

At full load ships had displacement more than 4000t and draught fwd/aft 2.3/4m respectively, therefore at landing on the beach displacement was limited to 2366t (weight of transported cargo was 500t) with 1.2/3.0m draught fwd/aft.

In total 1152 ships of LST ( 2) class have been ordered, subsequently building of 90 ships was cancelled. 86 more ships during completion have converted to auxiliaries: depot ships, repair ships, suppliers etc. Some ships (including LST16 and 18) in 1943-1944 were arranged by a flight deck for launching of Army observation planes Piper Cub, landing of planes was not provided.

Modernizations: 1943 - 1944, some ships (inc. LST16, 18 etc): flight deck was fitted, "air group" consisted of 3 observation planes (OY or NE).

1/1946, LST1 - 541: 1 x 2 - 40/60 Mk 1, 5 x 1 - 40/60 Mk 3, 12 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 10

1/1946, LST542 - 1152: 2 x 2 - 40/60 Mk 1, 4 x 1 - 40/60 Mk 3, 12 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 10
