Project history

Midget submarines intended for actions against the ships at the bases. War department became the initiator of creation of that boats. Under its order in 1939 designing of midgets for riverine service has begun. Soon the order has transferred to Admiralty needed similar craft for operations against enemy large ships. Armament of midget submarines was consisted of 2 dropped explosive charge about 2000kgs of explosives each. After clock mechanism setting for certain time submarine should dump them under the bottom of enemy ship and escape on safe distance. Midgets were delivered to their operation area under tow of large submarines of "Т" or "S" classes. Towing was effected at speed nearby 10.5kts. In comparison with prototypes, serial boats had increased from 60 to 95m operational diving depth. On the basis of Х5 class for actions on Pacific Ocean a little increased boats of "ХЕ" class, and also training "XT" class boats were built.
