Ship project history: Admiralty gave a contract to Bethlehem Steel Co to supply material for 10 submarines of USN "H" class in November 1914. These submarines were built in the USA under Holland design and fitted out by Canadian Vickers in Montreal (as the neutrality law not allowed to deliver arms directly to countries at war). Further 10 boats were to be delivered "after the war". The first 10 submarines have arrived to Britain in May-June, 1915; others 10, built at Bethlehem Fore River yard and armed by Canadian Vickers, in 1917 after USA entered the war in April. Boats were single-hulled and had small reserve of surface stability and buoyancy. Operational diving depth was 30m, maximal 90m.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Some subs were lost: Í3 (mined 15/7/1916), Í5 (collision 3/6/1918) and Í10 (lost 19/1/1918 for unknown reason). Í6 8/1/1916 ran ashore at the Dutch coast, interned and soon bought by Government of the Netherlands.
