Project history

These submarines were designed in 1943 specially for service in Pacific and had better surface speed and improved habitability. Unlike all previous patrol submarines, they were double-hulled instead of traditional saddle-tank form. Many technical decisions introduced on "Т" class during serial building, in particular, an all-welded pressure hull were used. Operational diving depth was 105 m, maximal 180 m. Welded fuel tanks placed inside and out of a pressure hull. The additional fuel stowage could be hold in the welded ballast tanks specially adapted for this purpose. In comparison with "Т" class, TTs were distributed between a bow and a stern more equally: 6 and 4, a partly out of a pressure hull.

Building of 46 "A" class boats was provided under 1943 Programme. Order for 28 units had been canceled.

Modernizations

late 1940s, all: - 1 x 1 - 102/40, 1 x 1 - 20/70, 2 - 533 TT (ext fwd)

late 1940s, several: + 1 x 1 - 102/33 S Mk II (QF Mk XXIII gun)

1955 - 1960, Acheron, Aeneas, Alaric, Alcide, Alderney, Alliance, Ambush, Amphion, Anchorite, Andrew, Artemis, Artful, Astute, Auriga: were modernized as follows:
