Project history

USN Coast Guard cutters, transferred to RN by lend-lease in April-June, 1941. They concerned to two very close Tahoe and Saranac classes, differing only in details. Cutters intended for service in Northern Atlantic (ice circumstances observation, for what their hulls were strengthened). Machinery of the ships included prevalent enough in the USA, but rare in the UK, turbo-electric gear. They were differed from other sloops by good habitability for their dimensions, however a number of the lacks was generic in them, not allowing to consider them as rigorous combat ships: the hull had insufficient subdivision on watertight compartments, bulkheads did not reach an upper deck which besides on the big extent was wood (not steel, sheathed by a wood, and continuous wood as by sailing frigates). Insufficient, to RN measures, there was also stability.     After transfer to UK cutters, reclassified to sloops, have passed the modernization directed on correction of the majority of these lacks. In particular, 30ts of a ballast were laid, some re-planning of internal spaces had conducted and absolutely improper armament was modernized for ASW operations. They received sonar, 2 DCT and DCR.
