Project history

Purpose-built standard Admiralty design. Intended for patrol, ASW and minesweeping roles. The smallest of the non-standard ships measured 248BRT with 36.8m length(pp) and 6.71m beam. William Westenburgh, the largest of the seven, had particulars identical to the standard ships. John Quilliam, delivered in June 1917, was the first of the standard completions.

None.

Naval service

Charles Astie 26.6.1917 was mined off Lough Swilly. Ouse was mined 20.2.1941 off Tobruk. Charles Hammond sunk 2.11.1918 in collision with leader Marksman off Kirkcaldy. James Ludford was mined 14.12.1939 off the Tyne. Michael Clements sunk 8.8.1918 in collision off St. Catherines Point. Richard Bulkeley was mined 12.7.1919 in the North Sea while on loan to USN. Thomas Cornwall was sunk 29.10.1918 in collision off Flamborough Head.
