Ship project history: Hunt class ships became top of development of a class of minesweepers in Royal Navy in days of the First World War. The experience accumulated at service of minesweeping sloops of Flower class and paddle minesweepers has been considered at their designing. The project has been created by Ailsa SB in 1916 and was based on earlier built here paddle minesweepers. At the expense of using of twin-shaft machinery it was possible to avoid the basic lacks of existing minesweepers: a deep draught generic in Flower class, and a danger to "catch" the emerged mine by a paddle wheel. As a whole the new ships have appeared successful and, being notably there is less than Flower class, yielded them only in seaworthiness (both because of the small dimensions, and because of small freeboard).

Ships of 2nd group had slightly increased displacement and flush-deck hull (ships of 1st group had a long forecastle) and the strengthened armament.

Modernizations: WWII, all survived: - 1 x 1 - 102/40; + 1 x 1 - 76/40 QF Mk I HA, 4 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon

1939, Doomba: was armed with 1 x 1 - 102/40 QF Mk IV, sweeps

1942, Doomba: + 2 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon, 2 DCT, 2 DCR (51)

1944-45, Doomba: - 1 x 1 - 20/70; + 1 x 1 - 40/56 Bofors

Naval service: Fowey was originally ordered from Dunlop Bremner but later reordered from Clyde SB and renamed Forres. Cupar, Kinross and Penarth were mined in WWI.

Dunnon was lost on a mine at Yarmouth 30/4/1940. Dundalk was mined 16/10/1940 at Harwich and sunk next day. Fermoy was sunk by Italian aircraft at Malta 30/4/1941. Huntley was sunk by German aircraft in Mediterranean sea 31/1/1941. Stoke was sunk by German aircraft at Tobruk 7/5/1941. Widnes was sunk by German aircraft in Suda Bay (Crete) 20/5/1941; subsequently she was salvaged by Germans and commissioned them as UJ2109. Abingdon was sunk by Italian aircraft 1/4/1942 at Malta. Fitzroy was lost on a mine at Yarmouth 27/5/1942.

One more ship of this type, Australian Doomba (ex-Wexford) was requisitioned by the private company where served as a pleasure craft, armed and commissioned by RAN in September, 1939 and served as minesweeper and anti-submarine patrol from June, 1940.
