Project history

Four more Type 22s were announced at the end of 1982, to replace Falklands losses, but they were redesigned to form Batch 3, with improved command facilities (including flag accommodation), new SSMs, a 114mm gun and a close-in weapon system (CIWS). The hull of the Batch 2 design was retained, but armament was rearranged to provide space for the medium-calibre gun. The eight RGM-84C Harpoon missiles were positioned athwartships behind the wheelhouse, with the 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS one deck up.

To mark the numerous differences and enhanced capability the 'B' series names gave way to a 'C' series. They have the CACS-5 command system (a version of CACS-1) and the gun was controlled by two GSA.8A Sea Archer electro-optical directors (port and starboard above the wheelhouse).
