Project history

40-guns 24pdr frigates (5th rate), reclassified as 50-gun 4th rate in 1817. Copied from design of French La Pomone, taken in 1794. Prototype was built of oak but 18 years later the design was revived for five frigates built of fir to meet the urgent requirement for 24pdr frigates.
