Project history

Screw 51-gun frigates, converted on stocks from sailing frigates. Originally ordered in 1848 as 60-gun sailing frigates. Original fourth of this class, Imperieuse, was begun as screw frigate in 1850 to a different design. Remaining three were reordered in 1854-1856, being lengthened by 15m. Immortalite was lengthened during construction by another 4m, she was allegedly the fastest wooden warship under sail, making over 12kts. Wooden hull.
