Project history

Ordered under the 1929 programme in Italy together with larger submarine Dumlupinar. Medium submarine, designed by A. Bernardis on basis of Italian submarine Argonauta from which differed in slightly increased dimensions caused by placing of more powerful engines for achievement of higher surfaced and submerged speeds. Single-hulled, with side blisters.    Sakarya and Dumlupinar departured from Monfalcone with mixed Italian-Turkish crews, arrived to Istanbul 5.11.1931 and commissioned next day.
