Project history

Original armoured ships built for Danube service. Iron-hulled central battery gunboats. The upper deck was only 48cm over wl.

Ship protection

Machinery was protected by 76mm belt, ship ends had 51mm protection. Battery had 76mm sides.

Modernizations

1871, all: + 6 x 1 - 76/18 Armstrong 9pdr 9cwt BL

1880, Memduhiye: was armed with 2 x 1 - 76/18 Armstrong 9pdr 9cwt BL

1884, Feth-ül İslam: - 2 x 1 - 160/16, 4 x 1 - 76/18; + 2 x 1 - 178/16 Armstrong 6.5-ton MLR

Naval service

İşkodra and Podgoriçe were captured by Russian troops at Nikopol 16.7.1877 and commissioned by Russian Navy as  Sistovo and Nikopol respectively. Feth-ül İslam was disarmed in 1901.
