Project history

Cruiser Reina Victoria Eugenia was built under the law from 30.7.1914, the design was developed on the basis of British light cruiser Birmingham, laid down in 1912, differing from a prototype mainly by twin-shaft machinery and weakened protection. Building was delayed because of non-delivery of some materials and gears from Great Britain in days of the First World War.     Installed during modernization 152mm/50 guns were taken from coast batteries. Conversion to AA cruiser as Méndez Núñez was assumed after WWII, but because of bad technical condition it have not effected.

Ship protection

main belt had 50mm thickness abreast machinery and 31mm at ship ends.

Modernizations

(7/1937-6/1938, SECN, El Ferrol): ship was completely rebuilt: superstructures were reconstructed, boilers were replaced by 8 oil-firing Yarrow ones, one funnel was removed (25500hp, 25kts, 1215t of oil, 4000(11)nm); new armament consisted of 6 x 1 - 152/50 Vickers Mk W, 4 x 1 - 88/42 SK C/30, 4 x 1 - 20/70 Scotti-Isotta Fraschini M1939.

1946: - 4 x 1 - 20/70; + 4 x 4 - 20/65 C/38

Naval service

In May, 1935 owing to outdating and bad technical condition República was laid up into reserve at Cadiz where after beginning of Franco mutiny she was captured 19.7.1936 by Nationalists. After that she was disarmed, artillery was transferred to coast batteries. Since July, 1937 ship passed major repairs and modernization at El Ferrol. After modernization Navarra was commissioned by National fleet 11.6.1938. Since 1941 she was used as TS and since 1947 as training hulk at Vigo.
