Project history

Work on the first submarine of project 955 Borey at first was extremely slow with only 2-3% completed by mid-1998, at which time construction was halted. The associated Grom missile program was cancelled early 1998, and the design of submarine had to be recast to accommodate the smaller, newly developed Bulava missile. The missile system was declared operational in December 2011.

Detachable crew rescue chamber is built in the sail. The hullform incorporates a Double Hogner stern, as in the projet 667BDRM SSBNs. This is the first Russian SSBN design fitted with a pumpjet propulsor. The hulls of first three submarines include pressure hull sections from the unfinished pr. 971 submarines, laid down earlier. Project 955A submarines are built under the expanded design with new electronics and 2 Modul-D multipurpose vertical launchers.
