Ship project history: First Soviet-designed submarines. Project was approved 15/10/1926. Large patrol submarines with double-hull construction. They had a number of original technical decisions; for example, a pressure hull with a shuttle-shaped form (subsequently never applied). At the same time, they differed by unprecedented mass usage of imported equipment. Originally 102mm gun was fitted on the CT, during pre-war modernization the gun was transferred on to deck; light hull form in a fore also was changed.

Modernizations: 1937, D-1; 1940, D-3; 1941, D-2, D-4: CT was rebuilt; - 1 x 1 - 102/45, 1 x 1 - 37/30; + 1 x 1 - 100/51 B-24, 1 x 1 - 45/46 21K.

Naval service: D-1 the was lost 13/11/1940 in Motovsky Bay during trial diving. D-3 was lost between 10 and 30/6/1942 off Tana-fiord; presumably was lost on a mine. D-4 was lost after 1/12/1943; presumably, was lost on a mine in Kalamitsky Bay. D-6 was blown up at Sevastopol 26/6/1942.
