Project history

These four ships were Khrushchev's concession to Soviet naval advocates of surface ships. Like the project 61, they were part of a new generation, development of which was ordered in 1956. The TTZ for this class was approved on 6 December 1956. In effect they replaced four Project 82R missile-firing battlecruisers, carrying the same quadruple missile mounts (but with one rather than two reloads per tube). Like other postwar surface combatants, they had the new pressure-fired steam plant. Like the contemporary project 61, they had the new M-1 defensive missile. Initially they were rated as destroyed and reclassified as cruisers 29.9.1962. Of 16 planned units, only four were built.
