Ship project history: These four ships were Khrushchev's concession to Soviet naval advocates of surface ships. Like the project 61, they were part of a new generation, development of which was ordered in 1956. The TTZ for this class was approved on 6 December 1956. In effect they replaced four Project 82R missile-firing battlecruisers, carrying the same quadruple missile mounts (but with one rather than two reloads per tube). Like other postwar surface combatants, they had the new pressure-fired steam plant. Like the contemporary project 61, they had the new M-1 defensive missile. Initially they were rated as destroyed and reclassified as cruisers 29/9/1962. Of 16 planned units, only four were built.

Modernizations: early 1970s, all: - 2 x 4 P-35 SSM (16 4K44); + 2 x 4 Progress SSM (16 4M44)

1974-1975, all: - 1 x 2 M-1 Volna SAM; + 1 x 2 Volna-P SAM

1975, Groznyy, Admiral Fokin: - 2x MR-300 Angara radars; + 2x MR-310 Angara-A radars

late 1970s, all: + Don radar (2nd), MR-262 Ograda-1 ECM suite

1975, Groznyy; 1980, Admiral Fokin: + 2x Uspekh-U radars

1980-1982, all: - 1 x 2 Volna-P SAM; + 1 x 2 Volna-N SAM (16 V-601M), 4 x 6 - 30/54 AK-630, 2x MR-123 Vympel-A radars
