Project history

In 1881 Peru bought in Germany 2 merchant vessels built for Greek ship owner, then they both were transferred to the Great Britain for conversion to cruisers. Because of shortage of means Socrates was received by Peruvian fleet as Lima only in 1888, arriving to Callao 31.8.1889. Means for payment of conversion of Diogenes were not, she remained in Britain till 1898 when she was sold to the USA as Topeca.

Modernizations

1920: - 2 x 1 - 152/26; + 4 x 1 - 102/50 Vickers

Naval service

In 1926 Lima was converted to R-class submarines depot ship, being used also as transport. That time she could carry also mines. Ultimately she was stricken in 1950.
