Ship project history: Z5-8 were ordered under the modified project. These torpedo boats were intended for service in colonies and differed by structure and type of machinery. If 1st series ships had 3 water-tube boilers with mixed coal-oil combustion and 2 AEG-Vulcan steam turbines, 2nd series ships were equipped with outdate cylindrical boilers with mixed fuel combustion and VTEs. One, twin, torpedo mount placed aft, and two single were installed aside behind forecastle break, as on German contemporaries.

Z5 was converted in 1931 at Rotterdam to patrol ship for colonies.

Modernizations: 1931, Z5: 1 boiler was removed, others were converted to pure oil (3000hp, 22kts, 100t of oil); - 1 x 2 - 450 TT, 2 x 1 - 450 TT, complement 34.

Naval service: To the Second World War beginning torpedo boats were considered become outdated and were used as training and patrol ships. All ships in May, 1940 escaped to Britain, Z5 since March, 1942 till 1945 was used by Royal Navy as auxiliary vessel for submarines combat training named Blade. All they were broken up in 1943-1947.
