Project history

Plans to lay down a 10000t "LPX" dock landing ship in 2002 were announced in 2000. The construction contract for the first was announced 17.9.2002. Largest warships in the South Korean fleet. Built with four decks and 53.6x15.0m docking well at the stern; capable of carrying two LCAC-type surface-effect landing craft or 4 LCM and fitted with two 19t helicopter elevators, one fwd from island and one aft. Landing deck can handle five UH-60 helicopters and is able to launch and recover Harrier and F-35B V/STOL aircraft when equipped with a separate ski-ramp module. Able to transport over 700 troops; vehicle and cargo capacity includes 10 trucks, 6 tanks, 6 AAVs, three field artillery pieces, 10 helicopters, and two LCACs. Can serve as a command ship in support of amphibious assault, humanitarian relief, or other maritime operations.

Planned third ship, 6113 Baeknyeongdo, may be larger (24000t and 230m long)
