Ship project history: Built under 3rd Supplementary program of 1937. Development of Okinoshima, differed by arms structure: at the expense of fitting of lighter dual-purpose 127mm guns instead of 140mm, mine capacity has been raised from 500 to 600.

Naval service: 5/8/1943 Tsugaru was damaged by American submarine Silversides, 21/6/1944 she was damaged by Dutch submarine KXIV, 29/6/1944 she was sunk W off Morotai by American submarine Darter.
