Ship project history: Coastal (inshore) auxiliary minelayers. Under 1915-1917FY Estimates 13 ships were converted from standard tenders. Among themselves they were slightly differed.
Modernizations: 1930s, all survived: mine capacity was increased to 120.
1944, all survived: + (1 - 2) x 1 - 13.2/76, 4 DCT
Naval service: Enoshima 14/10/1944 was sunk at Formosa by American carrier aircraft. Toshima was sunk at Maizuru 30/7/1945 by American carrier aircraft. Ento 15/1/1945 was hard damaged at Formosa by American carrier aircraft. Ashizaki and Kurosaki foundered during a storm at coast of Japan 17 and 18/11/1945 respectively.
Katashima and Kuroshima in 1947 were transferred on a reparation to the USSR and China respectively.
Katoku in 1948 became patrol ship of JMSDF.
