Ship project history: First Japanese-built destroyers, built under the 1896-97 Post-war program to Thornycroft preliminary design. The project was developed on base of Shirakumo, the basic differences consisted in application of new Kampon type boilers, that, in turn, has led to necessity to increase a hull beam. Besides, Japanese have sacrificed speed in favour of hull strength raise.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Harusame was badly damaged 27/5/1905 at Tsushima by Russian gunfire, repaired, lost 24/11/1911 during a storm in Sea of Japan (45 dead). Hayatori was sunk 3/9/1904 on Russian mine 2nm off Lun Wan Tan (Port Arthur).
