Project history

Former freighter, ordered by Soviet Union but bought on the stocks and requisitioned by the IJN in 1939 for service as ammunition ship. After the war she served as repatriation ship and since 1948 under the MSA flag as a lighthouse supply ship and navigational aid vessel.

Modernizations

1958: re-engined (4365/4818t, 79.1x15.8x5.76m, 2 diesels, 1 shaft, 4800hp, 12.5kts, 10000(12), complement 96); + 4 helicopters

Naval service

In 1956 Soya was converted to Antarctic Research Ship and in 1963 reclassified as patrol vessel.
