Project history

Former Russian Oryol, captured 28.5.1905 after Tsushima battle. She was capitally reconstructed: 152mm turrets were replaced by single 203mm guns in deck mounts, funnels height was moderated, superstructures were altered: as a result it was possible to liquidate an overload and to raise stability.

Ship protection

There was 32mm longitudinal anti-torpedo bulkhead connected with main belt slope. Upper deck over 3`` battery was 64-38-mm thick, main deck was 51mm and lower deck was 38-25mm. Main deck was connected with lower edge of main belt and lower deck by slopes.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

Iwami was commissioned in 1907. From 28.9.1914 till 1.11.1914 she bombed German positions at Tsingtao base. 1.9.1921 she was reclassified to coast defence ship, in next April disarmed. After discarding she was converted to target and sunk on manoeuvres in July, 1924.
