Ship project history: Repetition of Perla class without any significant differences. Three more submarines of this class already after they were laid down were sold to Brazil in September, 1937.

On Adua, Alagi, Gondar, Sciré and Tembien in days of war CT size was moderated. Gondar and Sciré in 1940-1941 were converted for transportation of human torpedoes. 100mm/47 gun has been thus removed, and on a deck three cylindrical transportation containers were installed.

Modernizations: 1940 - 1941, Gondar, Sciré: - 1 x 1 - 100/47; + 3 SLC human torpedoes.

Naval service: Macallé was wrecked on reefs 15/6/1940 near Port Sudan after all the crew had been poisoned by halons from air-conditioning system. Uebi Scebeli was scuttled 29/6/1940 W of Crete after attack of British destroyers Dainty and Ilex. Gondar was scuttled by crew 30/9/1940 near Alexandria after attack of British destroyers Diamond and Stuart. Durbo was sunk 18/10/1940 E of Gibraltar by British destroyers Firedrake and Wrestler. Lafolé was sunk 20/10/1940 N of Melilla by British destroyers Gallant, Griffin and Hotspur. Neghelli was sunk 19/1/1941 at coast of Greece by British destroyer Greyhound. Tembien was sunk 2/8/1941 by ramming of British cruiser Hermione at coast of Tunisia. Adua was sunk 30/9/1941 E of Cartagena by British destroyers Gurkha and Legion. Sciré was sunk 10/8/1942 near Haifa by British armed trawler Islay. Dagabur was sunk 12/8/1942 by ramming of British destroyer Wolverine. Dessié was sunk 28/11/1942 near Bon by British destroyers Quiberon and Quentin. Uarsciek was sunk 15/12/1942 S of Malta by British destroyer Petard and Greek destroyer Vasilissa Olga. Ascianghi was sunk 23/7/1943 S of Sicily by British destroyers Eclipse and Laforey. Aradam was scuttled by crew 9/9/1943 at Genoa, raised by Germans, never commissioned by Kriegsmarine, and sunk by Allied aircraft 4/9/1944. Axum ran aground at Western coast of Greece and was scuttled by crew 28/12/1943. Beilul was captured 9/9/1943 by German troops in Monfalcone harbour, but never commissioned by Kriegsmarine and in May, 1945 sunk by Allied aircraft.
