Transport submarines, specially designed for routes to Japan. Partially double-hulled. They had four watertight cargo holds with 610m³ total capacity. Maximal cargo weight was 600t. The defensive armament originally consisted of three AA MGs, already after submarines were laid down they received two 450mm TTs, however they were installed not on all subs. So, both completed submarines had no TTs.
Only two submarines of this class were completed.
R3 and R4 were taken by Italian Navy 14.11.1946 in 77% and 71% of availability and were broken up. Building of R5 and R6 actually did not begin, the order was cancelled 1.8.1944. Remaining 6 submarines were captured by German troops at Monfalcone (R7, R8 and R9) and La Spezia (R10, R11 and R12) in September, 1943. They were renamed UIT4, 5, 6, 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Germans had tried to complete these boats, they even have been launched, however it was not possible to complete any of them. Three incomplete submarines at Monfalcone were sunk by Allied aircraft: UIT4 25.5.1944, UIT6 20.4.1944 and UIT5 16.3.1945. Remaining were scuttled by Germans 24.4.1945 at La Spezia (UIT1 and UIT3) and Genoa (UIT2). R11 and R12 were raised in 1946 and used as floating oil tanks GR522 and GR523.
Remo was sunk 15.7.1943 in a bay of Taranto by British submarine United. Romolo was sunk 18.7.1943 near Augusta by British aircraft.
