Project history

Transferred from the USA to Iran under Mutual Assistance Programme (MDAP). Built in two phases, five years apart. Design similar to the Italian-built Pattimura class built for Indonesia. Sometimes classified as corvettes. Named after naval officers killed in action with the British in 1941.

Modernizations

1980s, both survived: - 1 x 24 - 178 Hedgehog ASWRL; + 1 x 2 - 23/87 ZU-23-2

1990, both survived: - 1 x 2 - 23/87, 4 DCT, 2 DCR, SPG-34 radar; + 2 x 1 - 20/90 GAM-B-01, 2 x 1 - 12.7/90, Decca 1226 radar

2009, Naghdi; 2013, Bayandor: - 2 x 1 - 76/50; + 2 x 2 C-802 Noor SSM (4 C-802), 1 x 1 - 76/62 OTO-Melara Compact, 2 x 3 - 324 TT

Naval service

Two ships were lost during Iran-Iraq war in 1982: Milanian was bombed and Kahnamoui was sunk by missiles launched from helicopters.
