Ship project history: Ex-Italian transport submarines of Romolo class, captured in outfitting bassins (UIT1, 2) or on the stocks (UIT3 - 6) by German troops 8/9/1943, building of all six submarines was suspended from 13/9/1944. UIT1 was scuttled 9/9/1943 by Italians but salvaged by Germans, building was continued at Genoa but 4/10/1944 submarine was sunk by British bombers. Incomplete UIT2 was bombed by Allied aircraft 24/4/1945 at Genoa. Incomplete UIT3 was bombed by Allied aircraft 24/4/1945 at La Spezia. British bombers sunk incomplete UIT4 at Monfalcone 25/5/1944, UIT5 20/4/1944 and UIT6 16/3/1945 respectively.
