Project history

First German submarine, more experimental than battle boat. Partly double-hulled. Design was based on built by Germaniawerft Russian boats of Karp class.

Naval service

Used for trials and training, condemned in 1919, but bought by the builder, Germaniawerft, and donated to the Deutsches Museum, München where it is still exhibited.
