Project history

Former Dutch protected cruiser. Already deleted from fleet list (24.8.1939) ship was captured by German troops at Den Helder in May, 1940. In 1941-1944 she was converted to floating AA battery, works were implemented by Giessen at Krimpen, then by Schichau at Elbing. Würzburg radar was installed. Unlike Ariadne class, Niobe had main machinery and could make about 15kts. Ship was commissioned by Kriegsmarine 1.3.1944 as Niobe.

Ship protection

51mm deck had 51mm slopes.

Modernizations

1944: - 8 x 1 - 20/65; + 4 x 1 - 40/56 FlaK 28.

Naval service

Niobe was 16.7.1944 sunk by Soviet aircraft at Kotka (Finland).
