Project history

First 8 boats were built on order of China, officially sold in 1938-1939, but in August, 1939 under the influence of Japan which has joined to Anti-Comintern pact, requisitioned and commissioned by Kriegsmarine. Boats were similar to S10 class, but had a forecastle. In 1941-1942 all survived boats arrived to Mediterranean sea and subsequently were lost during operations.

1941, most survived armed with C/30 automatic guns: - 1 x 1 - 20/65; + 2 x 1 - 20/65 C/38

1942 - 1943, all survived: can carry 4 - 6 mines instead of spare torpedoes

late 1942, some: - 1 x 1 - 20/65; + 1 x 1 - 37/80 SK C/30 or 1 x 1 - 40/56 FlaK 28

1943, some: - 1 x 1 - 20/65; + 1 x 2 - 20/65 C/38 or 1 x 4 - 20/65 C/38, 1 x 1 - 20/65 C/38 or 1 x 2 - 15/84

Naval service

S32 was lost 22.6.1940 on a mine at Boulogne. S37 was lost 12.10.1940 on a mine in La Manche. S31 was lost 10.5.1942 on a mine at Malta. S34 was sunk 17.5.1942 by British coastal guns at La Valetta (Malta). S35 was lost 28.2.1943 on a mine at Bizerte. S56 was sunk 28.2.1943 by American aircraft at Palermo, salvaged and 24.11.1943 during repair destroyed by American aircraft in Toulon. S59 was sunk 6.7.1943 by British aircraft at coast of Sicily. S55 was sunk 10.1.1944 by British aircraft in Adriatic sea. S57 was lost 19.8.1944 in battle against British MGBs at Dubrovnik. S54 was damaged 23.4.1944 by a mine and 31.10.1944 scuttled at Saloniki. S33, S58 and S60 during battle against British boats 10.1.1945 at Unije island (Adriactic Sea) ran aground and later destroyed by British MTBs and aircraft. S36 and S61 were damaged 6.2.1945 as result of collision and 3.5.1945 scuttled at Pola.
