Modernizations

1879: - 2 x 1 - 79/15; + 1 x 1 - 125/21 RK L/23 C/78, 2 x 1 - 79/25 RK L/27 C/73

1882: + 3 x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30

1886: HSE was replaced by HC engine (760hp, 14.4kts).

1898: + 3 x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30

1915: armament consisted of only 2 x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30

Naval service

Grille served as kaiser yacht and flagship of gunboats and also was used for fishery protection. In 1889 she was relegated to training role and since July 1915 was used as tender for cadets and training ship.
