Ship project history: Sometimes classed as protected cruiser on account of thin belt

Ship protection: Thin complete belt protected area from 1.5m below to 2.5m above water, its lower edge was connected with 35mm curved main deck by 85mm slopes. 8 139mm guns were placed in casemates and 2 amidships gun were protected by open back shields.

Modernizations: 1919: - 2 x 1 - 194/40; + 2 x 1 - 75/63 M1908 AA

Naval service: Became outdate before WWI and by 1914 served as gunnery TS. She was regarded as good sea boat. Late in the war Pothuau returned to Toulon, and was converted to air balloon carrier. In 1919 she again became gunnery TS, thus turrets were been replaced by antiaircraft guns.
