Project history

This class were of very fine lines with plough bows, forecastle and poop, two funnels and three light masts, later two except in Surcouf. There was considerable tumblehome. The 139mm, of which only two were originally carried by Forbin, were in upper deck sponsons. Coëtlegon failed on trials and her engines were replaced, resulting in a three year delay in completion.

Ship protection

There was a curved 40mm armour deck with a cofferdam above and a thin splinter deck over the machinery spaces.
