Project history

An improved class of patrouilleurs designed for overseas service. They are altogether larger and more seaworthy than their predecessors of the Trident class. Four units were originally to have been part of the Force de Service Public under the designation SP 400, and were to have been fitted with fire-ftghting, search-and-rescue, and anti-pollution equipment. This project was abandoned, and all units were built identical. The programme was delayed by propulsion problems experienced with the first ship. In order to minimise infrared emissions the exhaust gases from the diesels were discharged underwater, and the escape valves were found to admit water at high temperatures. In 1990 L'Audacieuse was given conventional twin funnels to resolve the problem, and this modification has till 2000 been extended to all other units of the class.

Two large 35m³ holds, served by a hydraulic crane, are provided to enable these vessels to transport equipment and stores between the overseas islands, and there is accommodation for twenty passengers. Provision was made for the addition of two Exocet missiles and a fire control radar, and La Glorieuse earned out trials of a Thomson-CSF VDS-12 sonar in 1985.
