Project history

Ordered to replace the former minesweeper Mercure in the fishery protection role, Grèbe was based on the commercial Espadon 50 design, employing a deep-vee hull form capable of operating at speed in Sea State 4. She had a stern embarkation ramp for an EDL 700 7-metre rigid inflatable, and accommodation for up to 22 passengers. A 400m³/hr fire-fighting monitor was installed, and there were two 7m³ capacity spill recovery holding tanks.

Three additional units (Flamant class) were ordered in 1992, but construction was delayed by the closure of the original contract yard.
