Project history

28.8.1937 Chinese government with intermediary of HARPO has signed with Flender Werke (Lübeck) contract on building of 5 submarines: two small of German IIB series and three medium close to German boats of VIIA series. Both small submarines were laid down 31.3.1938 and 16.4.1938 respectively, but in September, 1939 were requisitioned and in 1940 completed for Kriegsmarine as U120 and U121. Building of three medium submarines (building numbers 270-272) did not begin, but prepared constructions and materials for No270 were used for building of U83 of VIIB series.     On one of sources, boats with numbers 271 and 272 for China should be not medium but small submarines of specialized project 257 (255t surfaced).
