Project history

The design for this Soviet submarine was supplied to China prior to the expulsion of the Soviet advisers in 1960, but although 200 was completed at Luda in 1964 with the three vertical tubes for R-11FM SLBMs at the aft end of the conning tower; the SLBMs themselves were not provided, and later submarine was rebuilt for tests of Chinese designed SLBMs.

Modernizations

1972: - 3 R-11FM SLBMs; + 2 Ju Lang-1 SLBM (2 JL-1)

11/1978, as type 031: JL-1 SLBM can be launched underwater

1995: - 2 Ju Lang-1 SLBM; + 1 Ju Lang-2 SLBM (1 JL-2)
